Forte di Gavi (Gavi Castle)

The existence of a castle in Gavi is attested since 973. With an imperial diploma dated 30 May 1191, Henry VI, son of Frederick I Barbarossa, gave the castle and the village as a feud to the Republic of Genoa. In 1418, because of war events, the feud passed under the rule of the Visconti family of Milan; after other changes of ownership, in 1528 it returned to the Republic of Genoa, which held it until 1815, the year in which the ancient republic was annexed to the Savoy kingdom.

Campionissimi Museum

It is a museum in Novi Ligure dedicated to cycling and in particular to the cyclists Fausto Coppi and Costante Girardengo, who lived most of their lives in this city.

The Historic Center of Novi Ligure

At only 1km from the Villa you can visit a nice town with a lively look that you can discover in one day. The small town center can be easily visited on foot.

Walking along the street will allow you to better appreciate the frescoes and the Ligurian style decorations that characterize the historical center. The streets converge to lead you to Piazza delle Piane, the main square of the town, overlooked by a couple of bars and the town hall.

The latter stands next to the parish church, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which dominates the square with its facade. The Palazzo delle Piane, now a municipal building, brightens up the square with its elaborate frescoes typical of the Ligurian style.

Libarna

Along the provincial road 35 “dei Giovi” between Arquata Scrivia and Serravalle Scrivia in the province of Alessandria, the remains of the ancient Roman city of Libarna emerge. The current archaeological area represents a small part of the ancient city, which occupied a much larger area. Thanks to 3D reconstructions you can now see how some of the buildings of the ancient Roman city might have looked like.

History of Villa Pomela

The first news of a building placed in the area where the present Villa Pomela rises dates back to the end of the XVII century. It was the farm owned by Giovanna Pomella Tassistro, reported in a plan drawn up in 1694. In 1897 the owners of the time, Giacomo and Marcello De Micheli brothers, started the first big building renovation with Luigi Rovelli as architect. Mr. Rovelli, born in Milan but genoese by adoption, redesigned the building structure that became the stately home, Belle Époque queen of the early ‘900s. At the end of the ’80s, the property of the building passed to the D’Amore family that made, thanks to the intervention of expert architects, the elegant Relais that you can nowadays see and that was inaugurated in the summer of 1994.

Curiosity:

In 1876 the composer Amilcare Ponchielli was accomodated in the Villa rooms. He was the composer of the “Dance of the Hours”, protagonist song of Walt Disney’s film “Fantasy”, where hippos and crocodiles are comically dancing.
